Released on October 12, 1999, this is the fifth coin released in the 50 State® Quarter Program and the fifth released in 1999. Connecticut, admitted into the Union on January 9, 1788, highlighted the The Charter Oak tree which proved to be a good hiding place for the state's original Constitution. The coin is inscribed: The Charter Oak; Connecticut; 1789; 1999; and E Pluribus Unum. President William J. Clinton was in office when this legislation was signed. Three United States Mint Directors served under President Clinton's tenure; David J. Ryder of Idaho, Philip N. Diehl of Texas, and Jay W. Johnson of Wisconsin.
